This photo was a bit of a challenge for me, but I must admit it's half the reason I tried my hand at it in the first place. The photo I used as a ref was in pretty awful shape so a lot of it I had to kind of make up in my head, try my hand at what i know about the human face. I'm actually pretty proud of it. Ok, i'm very proud of it lol I don't know why, maybe it was the challenge, or the fact that the entire time i was drawing it I kept telling myself i couldn't do it and surprised myself in the end when i did. All in all I like it.

Specs:

:bulletpurple: Size: 9X12 on Strathmore drawing paper
:bulletpurple: Used: 6b and 4b carbon pencils
:bulletpurple: Time: 5 hours on and off

Enjoy!

I like the pose and the contrast in this one. Was it Mischa barton you used?

I really need to get some of those carbon pencils! =P
I love the highlights of the hair espcially, same goes for the hands, and the kind of "weathered" look of the style this was done in.
excellent piece.

out of curiousity, what technique do you use to do the hair. it is very good. what I do it draaw in the hair( dark or light depending on the shade of the hair I am drawing, and then I erase pieces of it in "strings" and then I draw a few random hairs over that. It gets a very good end result. I am getting pretty good at hair (If you have not seen my piece Ultra Trance, you are welcome to peak in my gallery) but I must say, that the hair on this piece is really good!

Thanks! I don't necessarily know that I have a technique but hair is one of my favorite things to draw. Maybe because i'm a girl and am vain about my own hair lol What I usually do is start with a light base shade, remembering to use long strokes and not short choppy ones, remembering how real hair texture is.I gradually build up the tone to reach the desired shade. After that I usually take a thin eraser (faber-castell pencil eraser, it's actually shaped like a pencil and sharpens to a nice point) and i go over what i've done to add depth by taking away pieces of what i've already done. And on parts that are particularly bright due to a shine i usually go over it lightly with a white pastel pencil, remembering to blend it in or it'll get a bluish hue. I guess my technique is just letting it happen. Very often I don't stick to what the real photo looks like other than for a general shape and length and go in and add strands where I feel they should be, it tends to work pretty well! Thanks again!

thanks  I had to pay close attention to the hand because the negative space / flash thing kept throwing me off lol my hand kept wantign to shade it even though it was supposed to be the whitest piece of the paper lol
